Recycling of Wood after Tree Removal

When hiring a tree service, ask what they do with their logs and chips. We all need to help with conserving our natural environment so encourage the tree service to follow suit.

Most tree services do not recycle the wood that is left after removal of a tree. I want to explain some of the alternatives to wood disposal such as:

  • Cutting it into firewood
  • Using the tree chippings
  • Saleing the wood to furniture makers
  • Pallet companies use of wood
  • Logging companies

While using tree chippers can be the easiest and quickest way to dispose of the tree limbs and logs from a tree removal, it is often times the most wasteful. The tree chippings often times get sent to the dump to decompose and are not used by anyone. Rather then doing this, as alternative would be to send the mulch to a nursery where it can be put to good use. Advertising free mulch is another way to get interested homeowners that are willing to take a large load of wood chips in exchange for the mulch being delivered right to there door.

Firewood is also a great alternative to the dump. People here in the mid-west burn wood to warm their homes. Putting a small ad on craiglist for free firewood will get the phone ringing none stop. Even if the wood is in large log form, there are some homeowners that have the means and desire to pick it up from the location of the tree removal. That can be very useful for some busy tree service companies.

I have also found individual that make furniture out of the trees that we remove. I have gathered a list of furniture makers in my area that I call up on a regular basis to let them know what kind of tree we are removing in the up coming weeks. They are eager to pick it up from our location. Sawmills and pallet companies are also on the list and can dispose of the large trunks that most people do not want to deal with. Recycling of this wood is very important to our environment but too often, the wood only gets taken to the dump and is never used again.

Tree services throughout our country should learn more about the available sources in their area to allow others to re-use their wood.

Your 3 blogs give a lot of good information on tree removal. Tree removal always seemed like an easy thing to do, except taking out the stump, since the two trees that I have removed have been very small. I can now see why you want to hire a qualified arboritis and do your homework up front.

I forgot to rate you, thumbs up, so I came back in and did it now. Now if I can even come close to giving my 3 hub pages the justice you did, I'll be happy.

I love the idea of contacting the furniture makers. And that bench is something I'd like to have on my front porch! You are clearly the tree service to use in your area!

Another very informative writing. I noticed one of your Hubs says it doesn't exist. Also, how do you rate a Hub? Anyway, all your writings are packed with good useable information. Well done.

Jennifer,

I learned from your 3 Hubs, great job. There is something else you can do with the stump by the garden, carve it into a bench, very useful.

Now I'm encouraged to do my own Hubs, Thank you.

Keep it up.

The Alpine Magnum stump grinder is a lightweight yet powerful solution, unlike any other grinder. See www.alpinemagnum.co.uk
